Solve duplicate listing issues with Frooition Bulk Revision Tools

Monday, October 25th, 2010

If you’ve ever had to do a major revision of all your eBay listings you’ll be familiar with how painful the process can be. Often changes are forced upon sellers by eBay, for instance when they changed payments policy to ban cash transactions or on eBay.com banned paper payments such as cheques.

Frooition have created two tools specifically to make the task of editing eBay listings en masse simple and fast:

Froo! Bulk Revision Tool – An eBay App Center tool.

and
Frooition Bulk Revision – an additional tool available for Advanced eBay Design customers.

Of course the first thing you can use the new Frooition Bulk Revision tool for is to apply your Professional Frooition Design to all of your live eBay listings!

Frooition have made the tool available for unlimited revisions for free for the first 30 days after you sign up to Frooition Advanced eBay design. This makes updating your current listings to a professional template design the work of minutes rather than having to manually edit or relist each product you have for sale.

“Bulk Revision can also help with the upcoming item duplication changes; you can alter your product quantities to ensure you have 1 listing with a quantity of 20 instead of 20 single listings!”

Even if you don’t currently use a Frooition Pro Design the Froo! Bulk Revision tool can still save you hours of work.

It gives you the ability to find and replace keywords in titles and descriptions, if you currently have listings which eBay may consider to be duplicates you need to ensure that differences are called out in multiple areas of your listing including title, price, photo, description, Item Condition, and/or Item Specifics.

By using the Froo! Bulk Revision tool you can edit titles, descriptions, Item Condition or even add additional information to the end of your description to ensure that your item won’t be considered a duplicate.

Another useful feature of Froo! Bulk Revision is the ability to quickly and easily adjust prices. Often this is something out of control of the seller, such as your supplier putting up prices, or as has been the case recently in the UK the amount of sales tax (VAT) changing.

Bulk Revision can also help with the upcoming item duplication changes; you can alter your product quantities to ensure you have 1 listing with a quantity of 20 instead of 20 single listings!

If you sell in a category where prices are particularly volatile, for instance computer memory, the tool will allow you to adjust your prices (both auction start price and Buy It Now prices) as market conditions change. You can also adjust prices on your products to ensure that you are competitive, but adjust prices up if there becomes a shortage of product in the marketplace to maximise profits.

Another change often outside the control of sellers is shipping and dispatch times. The winter season is approaching and often during inclement weather couriers may be unable to collect or deliver and your warehouse staff may not be able to get into work. If this happens Froo! Bulk Revision will allow you to quickly amend your dispatch times on your eBay listings to let customers know that it will take longer for their items to arrive. This used in conjunction with adding additional information to your listings is a great way to ensure you meet customer expectations, and of course you can amend your listings back to normal when the disruption to your business ends.

When eBay change policies affecting areas of your listing such as your returns policy this can mean editing every listing you have live on eBay. Again if you change your email address editing your PayPal payment address is critical to ensure that you continue to receive the funds into your account when buyers make payments. The Froo! Bulk Revision Tool handles both returns policy and PayPal payment address changes with ease and regardless of how many listings you have live on eBay you can edit them all in a one step process.

The cost of the Froo! Bulk Revision varies depending how many listings you wish to revise each month, but everyone gets 25 revisions for free every single month, and the price rises to a maximum of $15 for an unlimited number of revisions. You’ll automatically be billed based on the number of amendments you make and the price band you fall into.

If you need to make some changes to some of your listings you can sign up and try Froo! Bulk Revision for free in the eBay Apps Center.

Solve duplicate listing issues with eBay Parts Compatibility

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Listing with Parts Compatibility is a great way for sellers on eBay Motors to ensure that they comply with the new eBay.com Item Duplication Policy. Although the policy does allow for up to five Fixed Price listings per part when an item fits specific products or models, Parts Compatibility listings give much greater flexibility and will also boost your listings higher in Best Match.

“EBay Motors sellers no longer have to include the names of all compatible vehicles in the listing title”

EBay Motors sellers no longer have to include the names of all compatible vehicles in the listing title to ensure that their items appear in search results. In reality for most items this was an impossible task due to the 55 character limit for item titles. Now, sellers can create one listing describing a single part and add a full list of compatible vehicles in the new compatibility tab which will be displayed in the listing description.

The information included in the compatibility tab will be searchable by your customers. Buyers looking for your item, say a headlight for a 2000 Honda Civic LX 4-Door Sedan would still return relevant items even with a listing title of “HONDA HEADLIGHT” – So long as you’ve used compatibility listings with a full list of the relevant models that your item fits there is no need to include the models in the item titles.

This gives a lot more flexibility for including additional information in product titles. Instead of a title such as “HONDA CIVIC HEADLIGHT TO FIT 2000 LX 4 DOOR SEDAN” you could use “HONDA CIVIC EK JDM HEADLIGHT WITH BLACK EYEBROW EYELID”.

Car manufactures routinely use parts to fit multiple models. By rolling all of your listings for one part into a single compatibility listing on eBay Motors, each model will benefit from the recent sales boost in Best Match from sales for all of the other models that your product is compatible with.

The details available for Compatibility Listings on eBay Motors are: Year; Make; Model; Trim; and Engine. You can add an unlimited number of compatible motors to each listing that you create. To make the listing process easier eBay catalog includes a large range of parts which already have the compatibility information included so whenever possible list using eBay catalog.

For product which aren’t included in the eBay catalog you’ll need to create your own listing with parts compatibility information and this can be done with eBay tools such as the Sell Your Item form and TurboLister, or you can use a tool from companies such as Frooition to edit existing listings and create new parts compatibility listings from scratch.

When buyers purchase from a compatibility listing it gives them greater confidence that they have found the item that will fit their vehicle. In search results buyers will only view the listings matching the year, make and model they specified and they can verify that the part they’re about to buy fits their vehicle by looking at the compatibility tab displayed in your listings.

The big advantages of Parts Compatibility listings are time and cost savings as you only have one listing to manage for each product, you will be in compliance with the new Duplicate Listing Policy, and a boost in search results which will help the performance of your listing. Most importantly it will result in more buyers by making the parts you list on eBay Motors easier to find.

Frooition can help you apply Parts Compatibility to your live listings using Froo! Bulk Revision or using the design management tool that you get access to with the Advanced eBay Design Packages.

Solve duplicate listing issues with Multi-Variation Listings

Ending Duplicate listings on eBay.com

eBay.com have recently introduced a new item duplication policy which comes into force on the 26th October 2010. The highlights of the policy are that if you have multiple quantities of a particular product you must list them as a single multiple quantity fixed price listing.

eBay have also warned that if you do have multiple listings they must be to specifically address different buyer needs, e.g. single and bulk quantities of the same item. There is also a warning that sellers cannot use more than one eBay account to list the same products, you’re limited to a single listing for a specific item across all of your eBay User IDs.

For items that are made to fit specific products, models, or brands—for example a connector cable, phone charger or auto part—you can have up to five Fixed Price listings per item. eBay UK already have this policy but have a limit of up to five Fixed Price listings per item where items fit specific products, models, or brands.

eBay are also limiting different selling strategies which sellers use to appeal to different types of buyer, for example separate listings for identical items—one offering free shipping and one charging for shipping with the same or very similar total cost to the buyer—will be also considered duplicate listings.

To assist sellers eBay have introduced a duplicate listing look up tool which will not only identify how many duplicate listings you have (or more correctly listings which eBay will consider duplicates). From 26th October eBay will automatically end duplicate Fixed Price listings. Whenever possible eBay will retain the best performing listing but if you want to do this yourself you’ll need to act before eBay automatically cancel your items.

Multi-Variation listings

One of the reasons sellers traditionally listed multiple listings for the same product has been to gain a better position in search results. Some years ago when all items were sorted in Time Ending Soonest this would result in your listings naturally rising to the top of search results as they were about to end. When Best Match was introduced sellers continued the practice by listing with different keywords in titles to ensure their listings were found by buyers using different search terms.

“Multi-Variation Listings combines similar items which vary by one or more attributes, but are otherwise identical”

With the limiting of duplicate listings to a maximum of five on eBay.com, and only then if the item  specifically fits different brands or models, sellers now won’t be able to gain advantages from multiple listings.

It now makes Multi-Variation Listings much more attractive as a selling tool. A Multi-Variation Listings combines similar items which vary by one or more attributes, but are otherwise identical. This is seen most often in apparel where for example a shirt may vary by colour and size.

One of the big advantages of Multi-Variation Listings is that all variations receive a boost in Best Match, which means variations with less recent sales will appear higher in search results due to sales of more popular variations. This doesn’t happen with separate listings (even those allowed under the new duplicate listings policy where they significantly vary by colour or size).

Other advantages are cost savings – it’s the same price for a Multi-Variation Listing as for a single quantity fixed price item, and the ease of managing listings – you only have one listing to manage instead of multiple listings each with a different variation.

Multi-Variation Listings also give buyers the convenience of being able to select one or more variations without scrolling through a large number of search results. Multi-Variation Listings should become more attractive than ever to buyers as the total number of listings on eBay.com will be significantly reduced once the new duplicate listings policy comes into effect at the end of October.

Frooition have provided full support for launching Multi-Variation Listings directly from the Frooition design management software. This enables you to take full advantage of your Frooition listing template at the same time as easily launching Multi-Variation Listings onto eBay.

Actions to take by 26th October 2010

  1. Use the eBay duplicate listing look up tool to establish how many duplicate listings you have (you’ll need to log into the tool from each of your eBay User Ids.
  2. End duplicate listings, or wait for eBay to end the listings for you on or after the 26th October. If you end the listings manually you’ll have full control over which listing you retain.
  3. Cross check multiple eBay accounts to ensure you’re not selling the same product on more than one eBay ID.
  4. Use Frooition to launch Multi-Variation Listings to maximize your product’s position in Best Match.

New eBay policy improves search for buyers & boosts exposure for sellers

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

As an eBay Certified Provider, the Frooition team get information on upcoming changes [big or small] ahead of almost everybody else in the marketplace. We wanted to take this opportunity to share some information on an eBay release which is scheduled to be rolled out tuesday 26th October 2010.

This year eBay will help drive a more successful holiday selling season for all sellers by ensuring buyers have a quick, inspiring view of the great selection available for their holiday purchases. Effective October 26, the new Duplicate Listing policy will help prevent search results from being dominated by multiple duplicate listings of the same item from the same seller, and improve exposure for great listings from many more sellers.”

eBay have highlighted a couple of key points for this release which rolls out October 26th, once this listing duplication policyis released:

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. For any Fixed Price listing, the item offered must be significantly different from the item offered in any of your other Fixed Price listings. The difference must address a clear buyer benefit or need and must be clearly reflected in the listing title, price, photo or description. See examples to better understand the spirit and intent of the new policy and what qualifies as a significant difference.
  2. In the Fixed Price format, you can have only one listing per item. Multiples of an item must be sold in a multi-quantity Fixed Price listing.
  3. If you have more than one user ID, you are limited to one listing per item across all your selling accounts.
  4. For items that fit specific products, models, or brands—for example a connector cable, phone charger or auto part—you can have up to five Fixed Price listings per item. The specific products or brands the item fits should be specified in the listing title or description or in the compatibility section of compatibility listings in eBay Motors Parts & Accessories. See examples.
  5. The new Duplicate Listing policy does not apply to Auction-style listings. Note that Auction-style format listings are still subject to the Search & Browse Manipulation policy.
  6. New Fixed Price listings will no longer receive an upfront allotment of impressions in Best Match search results to jump start a listing performance score (the ratio of a listings sales to the number of impressions it receives). The clear advantage for all sellers will be to list Fixed Price items in low-cost, multi-quantity listings.
  7. Starting October 26, eBay will automatically end duplicate Fixed Price listings for you and credit your Insertion Fees and any listing upgrade fees on your next invoice.
  8. Use the duplicate listing look-up tool to quickly identify your duplicate listings.

TAKE ACTION

No action is required for compliance with the new policy—starting October 26, eBay will automatically end duplicate Fixed Price listings for you and credit your Insertion Fees and listing upgrade fees. Take these steps if you want to manage the changes yourself before October 26:

  1. Use the duplicate listing look-up tool to identify your duplicate listings and to see how each one ranks in search results.
  2. To consolidate listings, keep your highest performing listing and cancel the duplicates. Revise your best performer to add quantity.
  3. If you have duplicate listings for items that fit specific products such as auto parts and phone chargers, consolidate them in a maximum of 5 listings. Note for eBay Motors Parts & Accessory listings you have to fill all 300 spaces available with different compatible vehicles before creating a separate listing.
  4. If you have duplicate listings for items that are significantly different, revise the listing—for example the title or price—so the listings won’t be ended by eBay. Note that changing your title or price does not automatically reset your listing performance score (the listing’s ratio of sales to impressions) or necessarily impact your position in search. Of course, title can affect relevance and raising the price may make your listing less competitive—both are factors in how well a listing performs in Best Match search. Follow all the usual best practices for maximizing your listing performance.
  5. Note that spaces within units of measure in your title are now ignored when matching to a buyer’s search. For example if the buyer uses 5 MB in the search, your listing title will be recognized as relevant whether your title has 5MB or 5 MB (with a space). Use all 55 characters to help differentiate your listing.
  6. If you create separate listings for identical items in two or more categories, the listings will be seen as duplicates. To list in two categories, list the item once in the primary category and if it’s available, use the second category listing upgrade.

eBay are releasing some Best Practise guides, and a section for FAQ too, which will be made available through their eBay announcements channel (found in “Community” area of the eBay site)
